What this topic covers
Astronomy and cosmology is topic 25 of the Cambridge 9702 syllabus (2025–2027), covering standard candles, stellar radii, and Hubble's law and the Big Bang theory. It is A Level content, examined in Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions), which carries 38.5% of the A Level. Students commonly find it difficult to distinguish luminosity from radiant flux intensity, to apply the inverse-square relationship in determining distances using standard candles, and to combine Wien's displacement law with the Stefan–Boltzmann law to estimate stellar radii. Interpreting redshift and using Hubble's law as evidence for an expanding universe require careful explanation as well as calculation. Although the final topic in the syllabus, it is examined with the same precision as the rest of Paper 4.
