What this topic covers
D.C. circuits is topic 10 of the Cambridge 9702 syllabus (2025–2027), comprising practical circuits, Kirchhoff's laws and potential dividers. As AS Level content, it is examined in Paper 1 (multiple choice) and Paper 2 (structured questions), and Paper 4 also assumes it as prior knowledge. The ideas that cause most difficulty are the distinction between e.m.f. and terminal potential difference, the effect of internal resistance, and the application of Kirchhoff's first and second laws as consequences of the conservation of charge and energy. Potential-divider questions involving thermistors or light-dependent resistors require careful reasoning about how output voltage changes, and potentiometer problems demand a clear understanding of balance conditions. Working through these past-paper questions in order builds the systematic circuit analysis that examiners reward.
