IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Tutor: Core and Extended
Lessons in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) with Dr. Rizwan Jahangir, available online and in person. The focus is choosing the right tier and becoming fluent on both the calculator and non-calculator papers.
Core or Extended: the first decision
0580 is a tiered qualification, and the tier decides which papers a student sits and which grades are open to them.
| Tier | Papers | Length and marks | Grades available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator) | 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks each; 50% each | C to G |
| Extended | Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator) | 2 hours, 100 marks each; 50% each | A* to E |
The syllabus states that the Extended content includes all of the Core content plus additional material, and that candidates aiming for grades A* to C should study the Extended content. Part of the first lessons is an honest check of which tier suits the student.
Two papers, two skill sets
Since half of the qualification is sat without a calculator, number skills such as fractions, standard form, surds and estimation have to be secure on paper. The calculator paper rewards efficient, accurate use of a scientific calculator and careful rounding only at the end. Lessons practise both styles explicitly rather than treating them as the same exam.
What the course covers
The syllabus topics are Number; Algebra and graphs; Coordinate geometry; Geometry; Mensuration; Trigonometry; Transformations and vectors; Probability; and Statistics. Lessons follow the syllabus wording and the formula lists Cambridge provides for each tier, so students know what they are given in the exam and what they must remember.
How lessons work
- Diagnosis: we find the topics that cost marks before building a plan.
- Method and working: the syllabus asks candidates to show all necessary working, so written method is practised from the start.
- Exam practice: topic questions first, then timed papers marked against official mark schemes.
- Format: online or in person.
