9709 Syllabus 2026–2027: Papers, Routes, Topics and What Changed

Published Oct 18, 2026

This guide summarises the Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) syllabus for exams in 2026 and 2027: what is assessed, how the papers combine into AS and A Level, the topics in each paper, and what has changed. Everything here is taken from Cambridge's own syllabus documents, linked at the end.

What changed for 2026–2027?

Very little. Cambridge states that there are no significant changes which affect teaching. The updates to the 2026–2027 syllabus are corrections and housekeeping:

  • Version 2 (November 2024): headers on page 14 updated.
  • Version 3 (February 2025): typographical errors on pages 21, 26 and 28 corrected.
  • Version 4 (December 2025): a weblink on page 56 updated.

Cambridge has also published the syllabus for 2028, 2029 and 2030, and again says there are no significant changes which affect teaching. Textbooks endorsed for exams from 2020 remain suitable.

Routes to AS and A Level

  • AS Level: Paper 1 with Paper 4 or Paper 5, or Paper 1 with Paper 2. The Papers 1 and 2 option cannot count towards A Level.
  • A Level: Papers 1 and 3 plus either Papers 4 and 5, or Papers 5 and 6. These can be taken in one series, or staged over two years (for example Papers 1 and 5 for AS, then Papers 3 and 6). Paper 2 cannot count towards A Level.

Exams run in the June and November series, and also in March for schools in India.
